This family history website contains a record of the ancestors and descendants of Martin Bobowsky. Martin was was the son of a Polish baron born in Galicia in 1880. Because he was not the firstborn son he did not stand to inherit his father’s estate and the family expected him to enter the priesthood. Instead, in 1903 he emigrated to Canada and eventually settled in Winnipeg. In 1907 he married Anastazia Kondratiuk, also an immigrant from Galicia. Martin and Anastazia raised six children in North End Winnipeg until they divorced in 1930. During the depression of the 1930s Anastazia and all of Martin’s children migrated to Toronto to find work and eventually settled there. We know very little of what became of Martin after that time. He died in Winnipeg in 1959.

The information here is based on the memories of family members who knew Martin and his family supplemented by genealogical research. It is intended for those of his descendants who want to know more about their family origins. It is also, hopefully, for our more distant cousins who share our ancestry and might benefit from or add to our knowledge.

The People section of this site contains information about members of the Bobowsky family, including biographical sketches, photographs, census records, and civil registration certificates. No information on living family members is posted on this site. The Places section describes many of the houses where family members lived, places they worked, churches they attended and places they are buried. The Historical Context section attempts to portray something of the world these family members inhabited and includes links to relevant sites for those who want to know more.

The late William Bobbs and the late Ralph Magid constructed our family tree, which was the starting point for this project. Eric McIntyre’s compliation of “The Family, Relatives and Descendants of Joseph Galdzinski and His Wife Pauline Kondratiuk” made a significant contribution to the research on this site.
