Martin Bobowsky purchased a new house at 733 Boyd Avenue circa 1929. It was the first and only home the family owned. In a 2011 email to her nephew William Bobbs Jr., Angela Harrison described the family’s first home:
Our family eventually bought a home with a self contained apartment on the second floor, hardwood floors, a basement with a furnace to heat the house, an extra washroom and a closed in heated veranda with several windows. We were happy and loved our new home.
Initially the entire Bobowsky family lived at 733 Boyd and the second floor apartment was rented to boarders. The 1931 Winnipeg directory, which used information collected in 1930, lists Martin and Olga, and the street listing (not shown here) also lists a boarder, Thomas Kozbey, at 733 Boyd. The 1932 listing is similar but includes daughter Angela, aka Nellie. The 1931 census records the eight members of the Bobowsky family occupying 5 rooms of the house and an additional 3 rooms rented to Thomas and Olena Kozbej for $15 per month (for context, Thomas’ income was $100 per month). In the same census Martin declared the property value to be $3,700.

Around this time Anastazia and Martin separated and Martin moved out of the family home, although he continued to appear in directory listings. In 1932 Olga married Oscar Magid and gave birth to baby Karl and moved into the upstairs apartment at 733 Boyd. The 1933 directory lists Martin, Angela (Nellie) and Paul at 733 Boyd and the street listing shows boarder Harry Greenway, Oscar Magid and Martin.

In 1933 Angela moved to Chicago and it is likely that Paul moved to Toronto around this time, in both cases to find employment. The family finances suffered during the Great Depression and, as Angela later put it:
We had to leave our house because we couldn’t make any more payments. The government or mortgage company didn’t evict us immediately…
By the middle of 1934 Olga and her family moved to Toronto and Anastazia vacated 733 Boyd with her three youngest children.
According to the Winnipeg municipal database the house at 733 Boyd today is a 1-3/4 storey building of about 1200 square feet that was built in 1927. As shown in the photograph it still has the closed veranda Angela referred to.
